Motherhood After Dark

Charlotte Turns One

We made it ya’ll! Our sweet girl turned ONE which means that we made it through our first year as parents and God-willing we will see many more. It’s funny how life has come full circle. It is because of our sweet girl that I was really motivated to start my blog and stay committed to it. In the beginning of my blogging journey, I would write my blog posts in the middle of the night when I was up breastfeeding every 2-3 hours so it’s no surprise to me that I have found myself writing up this post about her first year of life in the middle of the night.

One of the best things that I could’ve done as a parent was to purchase a baby bundle from our milestone photographer Jessica Blaine Smith to capture the three significant times of a baby’s life within the first year. These are precious moments that will be etched in my mind and in my heart forever. We took maternity, eight months and one year photos. I encourage any mama-to-be to do this even if you wouldn’t normally be obsessed with capturing these moments – do it. It’s time that you will never be able to get again.

We chose to celebrate in two ways – first, with a photoshoot featuring a rose gold helium balloon and a vanilla naked cake from Ashley of Sweet Pieces Bakery (IG: @sweetpiecesbakery). The second was a “One in a Melon” themed birthday party with close friends and family at a neighbourhood park. The watermelon cake was made by Ashley of Sweet Pieces Bakery and the cupcakes were made by a fellow Mom friend named Subani of Minibite Desserts (IG: @minibite_desserts).

I had great ideas of customized labels on water bottles, customized tags for loot bags, activities to play with the children but it didn’t happen. Charlotte’s mood wasn’t the best either because she wasn’t feeling well (the teething phase is one I dread BIG TIME) and the weather alternated between sunshine and heavy rain. I am a perfectionist but I am learning to let go and not let the little unexpected fails ruin my vibe altogether. Everyone had a great time, my sweet girl didn’t scream her head off the whole time, the food and drinks were plentiful, the kids got to play in the splash pad and playground and we were under a nice gazebo so we didn’t get rained out when the rain fell. All-in-all, I think we did a decent job of hosting our first children’s birthday party.

In the past twelve months, Charlotte May has managed to make us better human beings and I will forever be thankful that God saw it fit to give her to us. She is a beautiful, strong-willed, and healthy little girl and it is such a joy to be her mother.

To our sweet girl, we are so proud to call you our own. From being a true foodie to mastering the skill of walking at ten months and being the epitome of expressions galore, we are in awe of who you are and who you will grow to be. May God continue to keep you in His favour forever more. We love you munchkin!

Xx See you all next week!
