Motherhood After Dark

An Ode to Mothers for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone will have to pivot and navigate this year’s celebration differently. We cannot rely on our children to bring home lovely arts and crafts projects for us but we can still enjoy the day.

To the Mother-in-Wait

I am sure that I am not the only person who knows someone who is awaiting their time to become a mother. It is not easy to patiently wait for something when you aren’t sure of it’s arrival. Because I am a mother, I cannot speak to such a desire but my heart is moved deeply by those who yearn to be in this season. There is a beautiful community of women who speak boldly, yet gently, on this matter by sharing their journeys. If you are in this category, please feel free to reach out and connect with other mothers-in-wait as that kind of support is truly immeasurable.

To the Expectant Mother

If this is your first pregnancy, congratulations! And if it is not, still, congratulations! It is my hope and prayer that whatever stage you are at in your pregnancy, it will (continue) to be a healthy and happy journey. To be pregnant in a pandemic is surely not any mother’s dream but it should not cancel the joy that comes along with the blessing of pregnancy. Whatever you need to do to stay in a sound and positive mind — do it. Consume more of the good than anything else because you need to keep your mind right by any means necessary.

To the Experienced Mother

Whether your a mom of one, two or more, you’re a mother and a great one at that. To be entrusted with the honor of being a mother is not one that I take for granted even on the days I feel like I am struggling to keep my head above water with our two girls. If there is nothing else that you take away from today’s post, know that you are doing a phenomenal job and you are the RIGHT mother for your child.

Every stage of the motherhood journey comes with its highs and lows because put simply, it’s apart of life. Life, as we all know, are filled with ups and downs. Find your tribe, love them hard and continue to show up and show out for your children because they need you, even if they may say/act in complete opposition to that statement.

In Closing ….

I’m not going to lie, I was really looking forward to a day at the spa (or something that was all about rest and relaxation) but I know that will not be the case due to the global pandemic we are all. I am at peace with that reality. One day soon, this life-altering time will be a memory but hopefully when it is all said and done, it would’ve changed all of us for the better.

Happy Mother’s Day to every single woman who occupies this role whether biologically, emotionally, or otherwise. As women in this role, we really are all kinds of incredible! I did a photoshoot with some incredible women for the Bluish brand (created and powered by a mom as well) and the thought that guided that photoshoot shot by Vivian of Sunday Kind of Love was “Strong is the New Pretty”. It was such an honour to be amidst such incredible women who were also mothers! We are indeed strong and resilient raising our little ones to be the very best that they can be!

PS: I’m looking forward to hearing how you were celebrated on this day at some point next week.

Xx See you all soon!
