Motherhood After Dark

Self-care as a Mama of Two

Hello Beautiful People!

If you tuned into last week’s blog post, then you know that I am celebrating my 30th birthday later this month. One of my many reflections as I prepare to turn 30 is about how much I do, or do not, prioritize self-care. I have a whole husband and two young munchkins to look and so, self-care is not always at the forefront of my mind.

What does self-care as a mama REALLY look like? For many, it means shopping sprees and regular trips to the spa. For me, it means taking a long hot shower at the end of a long (work) day, uninterrupted. Thanks to the Hubster and I learning to get on the same page, I have been able to do this for quite some time now. After a long day, I just need a moment to myself to breathe in and out. Once I have done this, I am able to carry on. Sometimes, I need a little more than this and I try to express myself properly, and the other times, Keith just knows and pushes me in that direction.

I think it is of utmost importance to be aware of who you are as an individual. If you’re not careful, it is easy to get caught up in the many different hats that we, as women, wear. While I proudly do many things, I acknowledge the fact that I cannot pour from an empty cup. Some days feel like I am slaying all the dragons and other days, it feels like all the dragons are slaying me.

In order for my husband to understand me and my needs, I have to communicate. Not only that, but we both have to operate in each other’s love language. There’s no ifs, and, or buts about this. He is aware of what I absolutely hate and what makes me tick. For example, he knows I hate to go to bed and there are dishes in the sink left behind. Either I will tackle them or, as of late, he will wash them when he comes in from work. It’s a joy for me to wake up to make breakfast in a clean kitchen.

All of our self-care rituals and journeys won’t look the same and that is perfectly fine. If you’ve taken away nothing else from this post, I want to emphasize the importance of making your self-care a priority. Make it realistic and attainable so that when you really are at your wits end, you are actually able to do something that makes you feel refreshed and grounded once again. Nobody is you and that is your superpower, so let’s make sure that you are always in the best condition that you can be!

Xx See you all next week!
